Blogmas Day #28 - Happy Birthday Mom!

This is the only picture I could find at the moment.....I have no idea where they are on my computer.....craziness!  This is when she was in high school...........back in the really old days!!!

My Mother is in the second row 3rd one on the left.....and my Aunt Alice (her sister) is in the top row, first one on the left.  My Aunt was older but they were in the same class evidently.
If I did my math right she would be 102 today but she died at the age of 83.  This is where she is buried....Evergreen Cemetery......what a peaceful and beautiful view......that's not her grave....but all my relatives are buried there except for the really old generations which are buried out in the country at the old Log Cabin cemetery.

Today I am trying to plan and get ready for the New Year.  I think my word for this coming year will be FINISH...last year it was FOCUS and I did better focusing than I had in previous years.  Also, there's the first book you read in 2018 and after spending much time on my book lists and reviews etc.  I have chosen Outlander by Diana Gambaldon.  It is the first book in the series.
This is a clip from Good Reads........
Outlander (Outlander #1)by
The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord...1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. I also plan on staying on top of my series books........I did a terrible job this year on my 2017 Reading Challenge....last year I pledged to read 50 books and I read way more so this year I pledged to read 75 and I have read only 37......sad but true.....I need to read earlier in the day or else I doze off! LOL!
The series I want to read are Harry Potter (I'm on Book #5), Aunt  Dimity by Nancy Atherton (book #2) and Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear (book #4).   Of course, there will be other books but I want to stay FOCUSED and FINISH these series as there are others I want to read like Louise Penny and Alexander McCall......and I'm sure there's more if I check my never-ending book list!  All this planning takes time but I did manage to do some cleaning and some laundry.  I hope you had a productive and enjoyable day or a relaxing one or all three!
Happy Trails!!!
P.S.  It was 14 degrees F when I got up this morning....so much for living in the South!

  1. Great school photo! 14 F is way too cold for me. We've been blessed with temps in the low 70s and my boys think that is hot. :) I've got so many books I should be reading. And definitely want to focus and finish and do so many other things differently in the new year. Blessings, Tammy

  2. I love how you set so many goals. And even if you don’t hit them all the time, at least you have goals and you’re making progress toward them. I think 37 books this year is amazing.
Your temperatures are similar to ours. We did have a couple of days of single digits earlier in the week and one morning it was zero. Tomorrow supposed to warm up to a balmy 32F. I’m looking forward to that!
Love the school picture. Your mom and her sister both beautiful ladies.
    Blessings, Betsy

    1. What's that saying "Reach for the moon and even if you don't make it at least you'll land among the stars"? I always try no matter what....no excuses! It got to 40 here today but this weekend is supposed to be bitter cold with wind. I'm staying in! Got my errands done today and the rest will get ordered from Walmart. Stay warm!
Thank you for the compliment of my Mother and Aunt...they were beautiful inside and out.

  4. Hi Sam :)) I think that your reading challenge is wonderful! Guess how many books I read this year? You could count them on ONE hand lol...most of the books I read lately are cookbooks though. And Stefanie said once to me not to discount the blogs I read too! :) I'd love to spend more time reading this year too. I love your word motivation for the new year...I have to think about mine. I think that I will use my cards to help me with that. :)

Happy birthday to your mom :) That photo of the cemetery is just so lovely and peaceful! :)

    1. Thank you, Rain.....that cemetery is where I want to be buried and I loved those hills growing up.....still do. The challenge is on Goodreads for free....you can keep track of your books and also keep track of books you want to read. Cookbooks count,,,they're some of the best reading! Most fo the cookbooks nowadays do read like a novel. Have you read Julie and Julia? It's a movie too I think about a gals who cooked her way through Julia Child's French Cooking book. I read the book and it was very good!

    2. I saw the movie! :) I have Julia Child's two basic cookbooks, Alex got them for me in 2013, they read like a textbook though. But I love her cooking!

  5. What a perfect picture of your mother's school days! My mother would be 93 if she were still living and my father 104! Thank you so much for posting this. It inspires me to consider sharing this kind of thing on my blog. I hope to grow my blog beyond YOPping this next year. No promises, but wish me well with that. ;^) I will be reading more blogs this year, I think. I've got a new pair of computer glasses and I'm over the moon happy with how easy it is to read a computer screen now. Maybe that will help me write more, too. =^)

  6. Your mum was beautiful. What a fantastic photo. They knew how to dress then. I just went through all of the books I had slated to read for 2017. I made new lists for 2018, everything separated by genre and only chose some of the books - 63 which is a good number.

  7. I love your word for the year. I need to follow that myself. I find I'm all over the place these days. I'm on book 4 in the Outlander series. I had a goal of 65 books for 2017 and barely managed to reach it. My goal for 2018 is 70 books. We'll see. I need to look up those series you listed. Stay warm!
    Hugs,
    Sharon
