I am a tired buckaroo!

I got up at 2:30 a.m. this morning so I am fading fast now at 5:30 p.m.  But I was able to get some priorities done today.  I paid a few bills, did some laundry, cleaned the frig and went grocery shopping.  I got all the ingredients for corned beef and cabbage for St, Patty's Day!  My favorite meal in the whole wide world!  There's the corned beef, cabbage, carrots, rutabaga, turnips and potaoes....yummo!
I researched traditional Irish desserts and found an apple cake recipe with custard sauce so that is what I am making for dessert.   I'm Irish but I don't have a big sweet tooth and I don't remember having many desserts growing up.  But I do like a little something with a cup of tea in the evening.  The recipe only called for 4 apples but the bag of apples was cheaper than buying 4 individually!
The great thing about getting up so early was that I was able to get the kitchen cleaned up and the frig cleaned before I went to the store.  It's so nice to be able to put things away knowing where it all is and that you've rid the area of 'past their prime' foods.  It gives you more room for one thing!
I always mean to do that but it doesn't always happen.....today it did and I was a happy camper!
Oh!!!  News alert!  News alert!  Did you know that Walmart now carries organic meat?  No organic chickens yet but they had all cuts of beef...grass fed and lamb and there might have been some pork there too.  I was so excited!  I just got a pound of hamburger as I'm trying to clear out the freezer.  I was thinking I was going to have to order online and I still might.  The Butcher Box has all organic and bone in chicken parts and whole chickens and grass fed organic meat and wild caught fish of all kinds.  I haven't checked the price yet but it's a subscription service.

I got all the groceries put away and did some de-cluttering and tonight I'm going to do some cross stitch.  What are you up to tonight?  I try to watch a movie on Friday nights.  Last week I watched a favorite of mine.....The Magic or Ordinary Days......it's on You Tube.
Happy Trails!!!

  1. We have our corned beef too. Hubby found a recipe to smoke it so he is going to try that this year. I was hoping to do my traditional corn beef and cabbage but oh well. I will make Irish Soda bread (with raisins) to go with it as well as potatoes. No cabbage this year. Will steam up some mixed veggies to go with it too.

Our farmers market had a sale on blueberries today so grabbed some of those. Washed them and then froze them. We like them in our breakfast smoothies.

Been alternating between knotting and crocheting today. I sewed all day yesterday and will post about that on Sunday.

Sounds like you have had a great productive day as usual.

    1. I am really anxious to hear how the 'smoked' corned beef turns out! our Farmer's market doesn't open until May here....isn't that crazy? No strawberries or asparagus...I do not understand that as my Northern friends have Farmer's Markets all year long. I can't wait to see what you sewed up!

  2. I have never liked corn beef. Dennis likes Reuben sandwiches and he says he’s happy with that, so maybe we’ll go to Arby’s for St. Patrick’s Day. Ha! I’m impressed at how much you got done today. Up at 2:30! I think you were getting up about the time I was falling asleep last night. I haven’t been sleeping well at night lately.
I’m about halfway done with my shawl that I started the day before yesterday. Hopefully I will finish it tomorrow. It would come in handy now that that it’s warming up just a little bit. I could just throw it over my shoulders if I have to run outside quickly, instead of dragging out the winter coat. Have a wonderful Saturday my friend. Blessings always, Betsy

    1. I'm with Dennis too...nothing like a good Reuben sandwich! Yum! So sorry you're not sleeping well...I sleep like a log but I go to bed early so I'm usually good for 5 or 6 hours of sleep. I would have a crick in my neck or shoulder if I knitted as much as you. I can't do any one thing for too long that's why I change it up with all my projects. I can't wait to see the shawl!

  3. You're making me feel guilty about my fridge! LOL Cleaning it out was on my to-do list yesterday, but as usual I ran out of day before I ran out of list. The corn beef cabbage and cabbage sounds wonderful!

    1. Do not feel bad at all....do you know how long that task has been on my list? LOL! I do about 3 priorities/day which are things to keep us all alive here and clean and fed and bills paid....the rest, I just go down the 'never-ending' list and try and squeeze some of then=m in when I have time. I'm like you...I usually run out of steam before I get to most of the things on my list.

  4. There's not a drop of Irish-ness in either my hubby nor me so we've never been big on celebrating St. Patrick's Day. And I don't believe I've ever had corned beef! Can you believe that? After getting up and going at 2:30 a.m., you must have felt like you had two days to work/play in. I got up this morning at 4:45 but maybe shouldn't have because I sat on the couch to knit . . . and fell asleep. Not very productive!

    1. Good for you! I spent a good part of the morning trying to get a cross stitch project going. I have to do it in the morning as that's when I have my energy for 'starting' anything. It was a comedy of errors but I finally got it going. I cannot believe you have not had corned beef and cabbage!?! It should be one of the wonders of the world! It is not necessarily healthy (the veggies are but not the corned beef) but it is so good. You just get in your vehicle and come down here and I will fix you some....or could I ship it? Probably not but really you should try it. I don't 'celebrate' per se but I send cards to the grands and make the meal and try to catch the parade on t.v. somewhere. You don't have to be Irish you know! Happy St. Patty's day to you both!

  7. OMG! There's 2 of you! Mama Pea has never had it either! Are there no Irish up in Minnesota? LOL! I would fix it more often but they only sell it this time of year and I would buy more and freeze it but I'm always clearing out the freezer at this time of year too. You guys don't know what you're missing!
