Just humming along............

I am as busy as a bee in Summer!  Monday I mowed, did some house cleaning and made mango, black bean and corn salsa.  The salsa is good and good for you too.  I didn't take a picture but the recipe is at All Recipes.  I ran uptown to get a few things and called the vet to see if I should keep Annie's yearly appointment for rabies, etc.  She said no as she is pretty much an inside dog now and can't go anywhere without me carrying her down the stairs.  BTW, she's doing okay but I know she had a stroke as she is not the same dog.
I started a couple projects from my YOP list and picked my first cucumbers/pickling cucumbers actually.

Tuesday was garbage day.  I ordered some floss and the Granny's Afghan cross stitch pattern. I have the material already.  This will be a long term project and I will be stitching it on some cream fabric not the blue.
I had painted the little pool but for some reason it is not sticking and much of it came off.  I may just plant it as is for now.  I'm tired of messing with it and these plants need to be planted or I may use some window boxes I have....we'll see.  I can't find my charger for my "jaws of life" which I call my chain saw scissors.  I'll have to use loppers if I want to keep trimming. I'm watering everyday now as it gets HOT...90's unless it rains.

Yesterday I went to the Farmer's Market here in town.  I was able to get some not quite ripe tomatoes, a zucchini, a sage plant and chives and a dozen eggs.  Plus, the Amish woman that bakes was there and I got a fresh peach cobbler she had made the day before.  Guess what I had for breakfast when I got home?
I also had some pears I was going to make a tart with but I really didn't feel like rolling out dough and that mess so I thought I would make a pear cobbler.  I looked up recipes as I loved the one I bought.  I don't like the kind where they use oats in it.  Hers was more of a sweet biscuit topping.  I found recipes and an explanation of the difference between  a cobbler, a crisp and a crumble. Now I understand.  Here's the basic difference and I quote from Weaver's Orchard.....

  • The streusel topping on a crisp contains oats.
  • The streusel topping on a crumble does not contain oats.
  • A cobbler features a biscuit topping, giving it a cobbled-road appearance and inspiring the name.
  •
The recipe I used can be found here

It was easy and delicious....qualities I love in baking!

This little guy/gal has a nest nearby as he/she sits on my windowsill and is there all the time or on my clothesline nearby........a  wren?  Can anyone tell me?

here he is singing his little heart out.........I'm saying "he" because do the females sing?

I worked on the Button Eyed Cat xs yesterday as it was Witchy Wednesday......he's coming along slowly but surely........

Not much excitement around here except the Barry storm is supposed to bring lots of rain here and winds probably if it continues on it's current track which means I need to get groceries tomorrow and get more yard work done before then.  It's looking like Sunday/Monday time frame but that could all change.  Weather.com exaggerates quite a bit!
I hope you are having a good week and enjoying your summer time!
Happy Trails!!!

  2. You have been busy! My vet does not do any injections after a certain age either. Unfortunately the rabies is required no matter what for registration purposes. But they forgo distemper & parvovirus when they become advanced seniors.

That dessert looks so yummy. I am thinking if making something with the apples I have. Maybe a cobbler or crumble.

I have no idea what bird that is. We only have birds (other than pigeons) here in the winter. It's too hot in the summer for them.

  3. You have been busy-- I don't know how you get all that yard work done with the heat and i gather humidity you have there! It has been rainy here in Seattle all week-but temps it he 70's and it is humid--which I HATE! We were predicted to have a hotter and dryer than normal summer (like we've had the past 4 years) but now with the rain we have received this week and maybe into this weekend, we might actually go down as the rainiest July on record! I won't complain if our hot (streaks of high 80's and 90's) weather holds of until August to get here-- that means we got to have a comfortable June and July. I am totally going to check into that pear cobbler recipe--although I might go for crumble!
Love to you and your Annie!

  4. Yes that Barry sounds bad, hope it doesn't get you too wet and windy. You have been busy...here too I am sorry that Annie is just not herself. :(

  5. The button-eyed cat made me laugh! I never realized there is a difference between fruit crisp, crumble, and cobbler! Good to know.

I'm wondering about the paint on your little plastic pool. What kind did you use? We are in the process of painting our rain tanks, but I opted for Krylon brand which is supposed to stick to plastic! The vinyl trim on our back door window was painted with regular exterior trim paint and that is peeling off.

  6. I love reading your posts. You inspire me to do more. The baking looks wonderful and sounds even better. We've had some rain here this week which is unusual for July. Normally we don't have any precipitation from Memorial Day to Labor Day. If it keeps the wildfires down, I'm all for the rain showers.
I love that granny square cross stitch. Granny's are my favorite blankets to crochet so I would love to find that pattern. I'll be checking online to see if I can find it.
I'm sorry to hear about Annie. These babies of ours keep us going but sure give our hearts a workout.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  7. Huh. I didn't know about the differences between a crisp, a crumble and a cobbler. I don't care for oats in my apple crisp. So I guess what I make is really a crumble? You've also given me an idea for what to take to a lady's night out pitch in next week. We're to take a dish that has a memory attached to it. My mom's peach cobbler is one of those desserts I don't make very often because it's too tempting to eat the whole thing. Taking it to share with others sounds like a great idea. I'm sorry to hear that Annie isn't fulling recovering back to her old self. Hugs to you, friend.

  8. Hi Sam :) The cobbler looks yummy! I'm a fan of streusel topping myself. I wonder if the little pool has some kind of coating on it that makes it hard to paint? I hope you stay safe during the bad weather. Ours is pretty humid and we've had some amazing thunderstorms the last few days. Give Annie a hug for me! :) xx
