Crazy Monday yesterday!

Sunday...yes, even on Mother's Day, I had to wash up my produce and I had a lot of it!  I wash everything when I get back from grocery shopping (usually) so it is ready to go when I want to use it except for berries.  I don't use any fancy 'wash' that they now sell just my regular Dawn.......
I wash the potatoes last as they are  usually the dirtiest............I  use an old vegetable brush that my Mother had.....it must be at least 60 years old as I remember it as a child............I scrub all the potatoes whether I'm going to peel them or not...........
then a rinse and they are laid out on an old towel to dry............
this is the water after I washed everything............pretty dirty!!!
Yesterday, a crane showed up at my neighbors early to unload roof shingles onto her roof.....the dogs were pretty upset about it! LOL!  Then the roofer came and started in, then my roofers called and said they were on their way over.........so much for my  plans!  They had to go in the attic/crawlspace and what a mess when they came down, from all the insulation.  Then they went on the porch and tore down some drywall and hopefully after all that mess they have found the problem.  I am grateful for them though and their persistence!  But today I need to do some serious vacuuming!
I did manage to make some bread though!  I used Apples for Jam's Milk Bread Recipe which turned out fantastic!  Best looking and tasting bread ever!  I love my rustic bread but it is pretty hard to chew and bite and I think I need to be considerate of my teeth and jaw at my age!  So this will be my new bread recipe.  Next, I'll try some wheat and so many more bread recipes!  This is definitely a keeper!
Mother's Day I did not get my chicken roasted....I just ran out of time and energy so I had a bowl of organic minestrone soup with my pie for dessert.  I got the chicken roasted yesterday (another recipe from Apples for Jam) and it was scrumptious....even better than Ina Garten and her recipes are usually top notch but Tessa's recipe beat her out! LOL!  It's not a great picture but the flavors were delicious and the chicken was tender and moist.....another favorite!  At this point, I would highly recommend her cookbook!  I'll be cooking more from her book this week.  I got my copy on Thrift Books for about $3.59?  Plus, free shipping if you order 4 and there was a coupon code for May with a discount.  How can you go wrong?
I'm now on row 29 of 134 of my Hotel of Bees Shawl.  I watched Inside Number 23 in the evening and checked IG for Joyce of Ruby Moss Cottage.....love that gal and want to do everything she makes!  Check out her podcast...she's a hoot and a darn good knitter and gardener!
I'm off to do some laundry, weeding, landscaping and so much more!  Have a great day!
Happy Trails!

  1. Your bread looks delish. I'll have to check out the blog that you mentioned.

Glad you got your veggies washed, it will certainly be a time saver when it comes to meal prep.

    Have a happy day.

  4. Ok, gotta get the Apples forJam book. Yoi are showing way too many yummy recipes. I try to get all my produce cleaned and "put up" as soon as we buy it too. I have the rubber maid Freshsaver containers and my fruits including strawberries last at least 2 weeks in them. Hopefully y ok ur roofing guys have finally fixed it. How frustrating for you and them.

I too feel we are friends. If we lived next door to each other. Nothing would ever get done lol. Ypur interests and mine go hand in hand. We must be from the same era. Plus, I was raised in the midwest by Iowa farmers. Might have something to do with it too.

Hope your shawl is making you happy. It looks to interesting. I have it in my library.

    1. I'll have to get those Rubbermaid Freshsaver containers...who knew...obviously not me! LOL! The shawl is great but not for T.V. watching....it's the most unusual crochet I've ever done but definitely interesting. I work on it on my 'breaks' from housework. My right hand is getting sore from the crochet though...I've never had that happen before....old age is not for the faint of heart!

  5. My goodness you're efficient! Washing all your veggies as soon as you get them. I tend to just wash them as I use them as my mother always told me not to wash potatoes because they will go bad. Have you found it makes any difference? I sure hope your roofers have found the problem by now. What a mess for you to always have to worry about it. The recipe book seems to be quite a keeper for you. That's a good thing. Yesterday I was excited about the chicken. Today I'm excited about the bread.
    Blessings, Betsy

    1. I have washed my potatoes for years as I frequently eat them with the skins on. I've never had a problem and they do wash them before they get to the store too but not good enough for me. I keep them in my crisper drawer. I've never heard that before but Connie (Far Side) said the same thing.

  6. Oh, now I have to find that recipe book. Unless you share the bread recipe. I am looking for a softer bread. Did you see on the news some guy in MI was putting rat poison on produce when he went into stores recently? It was mixed with other stuff too. Like you, if I have to buy it, I wash it good.

  9. Hi Sam! :) You know, I don't even wash my potatoes right away...just right before I use them. I'm glad the roofers found the problem, that must be such a relief. Happy belated Mother's day!! I'm going to look for your cookbook...I love having lots of different recipes, and I know what you mean about that rustic bread, the crust is getting hard for me to chew off too! PS, I forgot to mention in the last post, the turtle picture is amazing! We don't get turtles around here, at least they don't show themselves!
