Santa's elves are VERY busy!

Moving right along but it is hectic as I still need to do laundry and cook and clean pick up around here.  Tomorrow is Walmart as there are heavy rains headed our way the end of this week.  It's been beautiful here..sunny and warm but I have to stay inside and help the other elves...by the way...where are they?  I got the whale shark finished.......not too pleased...it sure doesn't look like the picture from the pattern but then I'm sure Uriah will like it.  I think velcro would have been better as the zipper doesn't work as well in a curve especially for little or arthritic hands.  I'll be filling it with magic markers before I wrap it.

I wrapped some butcher's twine around some clip clothespins for my daughter....as you can see, I have plenty!
I also baked a cake!  I wanted to try this old depression-era recipe that requires no milk, eggs or butter.  A great recipe when your sweet tooth is calling but you don't want to run to the store and you're out of ingredients.
I had some frozen cream cheese icing from another recipe that I thawed.  It was still pretty stiff so I frosted it while the cake was still warm and it worked out great.  Best frosting job I've ever done! LOL! (I am no cake decorator).  I haven't tasted it yet but here's the link to the recipe
I cheated and used a bowl simply because I thought mixing it in the pan would be messier knowing me.  I found a great area on Pinterest if you're interested.....I did a search on depression era and perused some very interesting pictures and stories and recipes.  There are also several cookbooks.  One is called Clara's Kitchen and she has videos on You Tube.  She passed away in 2013 at age 96 or 98 and her grandson was the one that did all the videos and he also left a beautiful tribute to her.
I hope you enjoyed your day and are getting your holiday preparations done so you will be free to enjoy them.
Happy Trails!

    1. It was very good! I was mildly surprised and it rose up no problem....there's all kinds of flavors too. I just made the vanilla. I'll be making more of this cake as it was so easy too. Yes, a fat shark! LOL!

    1. I would love to have you over! It's too bad we can't have "virtual" neighbors...although, I guess blogging is a neighborhood of sorts. Hope you're enjoying your visit out east!

  3. The shark is so cute. I loved watching the Clara videos on YouTube. I was watching as they were posting. You couldn't wait for the next one to come out. I think they also published a cookbook of her recipes. Take care.

    1. Yes, there is a cookbook and the tribute from her grandson was so touching. I hope my grandsons have fond memories of me when I'm gone. I need to go back and watch all of them.

  4. That's the kind of cake I make since I gave up all dairy products 2-1/2 years ago. So easy and turns out so moist and yummy. We've been fooled into believing we need eggs and butter for everything. I think it's just because there's an excess of dairy products due to the demand for cows for milk and meat so everything we get nowadays contains one or the other. Even here, a local bakery puts milk powder in the slice bread they make. If you read labels, just about everything has some sort of dairy. Your shark turned out great and I'm sure your grandson will love it. Best wishes, Tammy

  5. How interesting to be able to make a cake with none of those ingredients. I loved reading how her grandson paid a lovely tribute to his beloved grams. The whale shark made me smile; it looks certainly well-fed and ready to be snuzzled with.

  7. Well, the shark turned out darling! I made a chocolate cake one time that used an old depression recipe. I'm sure it was very similar to your cake :)

Glad you are getting everything done. I need to kick it in gear and finish up the last few preparations.

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!!
